After battering the east coast for days, Hurricane Sandy came ashore around 8:00 PM Monday, October 29, just south of Atlantic City. In addition to widespread wind and rain extending hundreds of miles inland and snow beyond that, coastal regions to the north and east of Atlantic City were hit with crushing storm surges that, in New York City, flooded subway and automotive tunnels and swamped lower Manhattan. Upstate there was some rain and wind, but no damage like that on and near the coastal areas.
